Custom faux finish

Custom Addition Built by Doug Humphries Development

The contractor had the “T&G” tongue and grove log timbers delivered to our spray booth. a semi truck with a fork lift dropped off the load in our parking area ,the logs were to long to get into the spray booth. Each piece had to be carried in by hand. This allowed us and the contractor to select only the good pieces to use. After pulling out the warped, gouged and split pieces that would be exchanged for select pieces. The customer wanted a stain that looked natural but with a little color to take out the natural yellow of the wood. Stuart Ross created several different color by mixing many stains together documenting proportions so large quantities can be reproduced. Samples on 3 foot sections of wood were stained and various sheen’s were applied so the customer could have a good example of what the finished product would look like

Once the customer had made his desiccation the crew (Overwhelmed by how much wood we had to work with) began light sanding to open up the grain for staining. after the staining was complete another issue had to be addressed. the finished product required two more coats of sealer and one coat of finish to be applied. this would take over a week to do staking the wood will cause it to stick together and in transit to the job site this would cause scuffing. OK do them after installation.

This also was a problem, if the wood was installed first the logs will expand and contract this would leave areas between the T&G that looked like no finish was applied. The solution was for us to seal and finish the tongue areas on all the wood in the shop and this would allow for them to be picked up and installed without sticking or scuffing. once the logs were in place the sealer and finish was applied. (Note: For every log you see Sanderson’s finish crew took six different colors of wood putty and filled ever nail hole to blend in with the wood)

The tree in the middle was brought in and encased in cement at the base. the top branches were cut and attached to the ceiling, making it look as if the tree grew from the ground and went through the ceiling. This was a unique situation to figure out how to seal the tree. there was bark still on the tree but it would fall of in sheets if touched. The areas that had no bark  once harbored bark beetles and left unique trails in the wood grain. We came up with a solution that would maintain the bark from falling off and give the tree a natural look when finished several products were used to achieve the final look After a few coats of (I wont tell ) was brushed and sprayed on the tree the customer a hunter was going to mount his trophy’s on it. I can already see the Bob Cat ready to pounce off one of the limbs. One of the neat things that happened after we sprayed the tree. A spider web that was in one of the hollow holes in the tree stayed inn tacked. After a clear sealer was applied the web hardened and gave the appearance of dew drops on it.

Interior Faux Finishing

The walls and ceilings were painted in various colors. when completed a faux finish was applied throughout. All work was done after the last show was let out and had to be ready for the first matinee in the morning
